Turn Off Sprinkler System

Turn off main valve to irrigation system (usually located underground in a box by the back flow device or water meter).

Next, open the drain valve.

Locate Your Back Flow Device

Depending on type of back flow prevention device, it will either be above ground 12-36″ or in a box below ground. Your back flow device will look like one of the pictures below.

Open The Test Ports

Back Flow Device Winter
Use a flat head screw driver to turn to 45 degrees.

If there are brass plugs or caps on your test ports, remove them first. NOTE: When replacing the caps do not over-tighten, they are there just to keep dirt out. Using a screwdriver, open the test ports from the Closed/Summer position (parallel) to Open/Winter position (perpendicular or at a 45 degree angle). There may be 1-4 test ports on your particular device.

Note: These will keep turning, but only need to be turned 1/4 turn, to 45 degrees.

Turn the Shut Off Valves 45 Degrees

The Shut Off Valve Handles should move from being parallel to the pipe (Summer Time/On Position) to a 45 degree angle (Winter Time/Off Position) as demonstrated by the black lines in the images below. IMPORTANT! Turning these valves to 90 degrees will trap water in the valve which could result in damage during freezing temperatures.
